Zero Waste

Zero waste is a philosophy and design principle that aims to minimize waste and maximize the use of resources. It's based on the idea that all materials should be designed to be reused, repaired, or recycled, rather than ending up in landfills or incinerators.
The Zero Waste International Alliance (ZWIA) defines zero waste as:
- Conserving resources through responsible production, consumption, reuse, and recovery
- Avoiding burning and discharging materials into the environment
- Diverting 90% of waste from landfills and incinerators
Zero waste aims to:
- Create a circular economy where materials are continuously reused
- Eliminate threats to human, animal, plant, and planetary health
- Reduce consumption
- Recognize materials as valuable resources
To achieve zero waste, you can:
- Reuse, repair, or repurpose materials
- Recycle items when you can't reuse them
- Avoid buying new things all the time
- Look for things you can reuse or repurpose around your house
The 5 R's (refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, and rot) can help guide you toward a zero-waste lifestyle.

Community Projects

Zero Waste Community Development Project
The Zero Waste Community Development Project is a project that aims to reduce waste and pollution in communities. The project's goals include:
- Supporting NGOs: Helping NGOs to manage domestic waste in communities
- Raising awareness: Educating people about waste reduction and classification
- Establishing a model: Creating a model for community-level waste management
- Encouraging reuse: Encouraging people to reuse, recycle, and reduce waste
- Motivating businesses: Encouraging businesses to make products that are more durable, repairable, and recyclable
The project is a collaboration between the United Nations Development Programme and the Vanke Foundation.
How does zero waste work?
- Zero waste communities use the 3 R's of waste management: reduce, reuse, and recycle
- Zero waste communities aim to avoid sending trash to landfills, incinerators, and oceans
- Zero waste communities use all materials until they reach the optimal level of consumption
- Zero waste strategies can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and conserve natural resources
